Unpacking the True Cost of Pet Parenthood in 2025: Insights, Trends, and Financial Preparedness for Pet Owners

Rover Releases 2025 True Cost of Pet Parenthood Report

SEATTLE, March 18, 2025 — Rover, the world’s largest marketplace for pet care, has released its sixth annual Report. Rover’s report shows rising costs. It highlights new data on the money needed to care for pets. Dog and cat owners now pay more.

Rising Costs for Pet Care

Pet ownership grows. Costs grow too. The report tells us: dog care costs rise by 7% and cat care by 10%. The study links a 10-year-old dog to about $34,550 in total care. It connects a 16-year-old cat to about $32,170 in costs. Breed and health affect totals.

Veterinary fees climb by 11%. Cleaning supplies jump by 183%. Grooming fees increase by 20%, and treats and chews go up by 85%. The report shows worry: 28% of pet parents fear supplies will be too costly. In addition, 52% worry that tariffs may add to prices.

Adoption Costs Decline

Adoption costs drop. Dog adoption now costs between $1,150 and $4,420. Cat adoption costs lie between $750 and $2,715. The report links this change with a lower interest in new pets. Costs drop by 19% for dogs and 16% for cats.

Dr. Rebecca Greenstein, a Rover Pet People Panelist and owner of Kleinburg Veterinary Hospital, points out challenges. She says, “The lifetime cost of a pet can be high, yet the love and companionship are priceless.” She advises pet owners to plan their budgets and use preventive care to lower future expenses.

Key Findings from the Report

Rover’s report gathers views from over 1,000 pet parents in the United States. The report connects several trends:

  • Pet Acquisition: 20% of pet parents got a new pet in 2024. Another 33% plan to add one soon.

  • Budget Concerns: Nearly half (48%) worry about rising pet care costs over their pet’s life. 31% see pet costs rising faster than other household needs.

  • Spending Priorities: For 69% of pet parents, food and treats are the main cost. One-third reduce other spending to meet their pet’s needs. 25% even change their lifestyles to cut costs.

  • Future Planning: 21% of pet owners now include their pets in their wills. Nearly 44% wish for more tax benefits for pet care.

  • Cost-Saving Measures: 31% set aside funds specifically for emergency vet visits.

Geographic Disparities in Pet Care Costs

The report links pet care costs to different U.S. regions. It lists cities where pet care is most affordable. Cities like Parsons, KS; Lawton, OK; and Anniston, AL rank best. Yet, in cities like Manhattan, NY and San Francisco, CA, pet care is more expensive. Costs are tied directly to location.
